The 10th anniversary of Impact Summit Europe brought the global impact investing community together to pose, reflect and address the current and forthcoming challenges and opportunities in the impact investing space.
From responsible to thematic, to impact investing as we know it today, the market has grown immensely to reach its mature stage in the Netherlands and other Western European countries. This growth in the industry has led to greater accountability of general and limited partners. Yet, more institutional capital is still needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Institutional asset owners, together with their investors, companies, and governments, are those who can shape a more sustainable and equitable future, a reality.
With the new vigour and thought-provoking perspectives from our industry peers, we hope to set a new ambitious decade for impact!

REDEFINING SUCCESS
Centred on continuous learning and improvement within the impact investing field, Impact Summit Europe reflected on the past 10 years of impact investing and invited the participants to re-evaluate the successes and drawbacks of their impact strategies. For the new decade, investors must stay proactive and agile to address the changing environment to reach ambitious impact goals.
MEASURING WHAT MATTERS
As the search for the most accurate and trustworthy data is ongoing, the challenge for investors is to decide when good, is good enough. Investors must pursue their investment strategies while finding a delicate balance between green-hushing and greenwashing. Data quality should not become a barrier for investors to begin investing with an impact lens. Through engaging attendees in deep-dive discussions surrounding the challenges and opportunities in finding reliable data for impact evaluation, Impact Summit Europe aims to aid investors in making informed decisions when navigating the data landscape.
IMPACT IN ACTION: INDUSTRY COLLABORATION
Finally, the summit addressed the vital role of collaboration in approaching complex global challenges. It emphasized the importance of investors working together effectively and engaging in meaningful discussions with companies, sovereigns, and policymakers. Attendees had the opportunity to explore successful coalitions that are actively tackling pressing issues such as plastic pollution and the circular economy.

Former Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women’s Deputy Executive Director for Resource Management, UN System Coordination, Sustainability, and Partnerships. Ms. Anita Bhatia served as the Former Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women’s Deputy Executive Director since August 2019.
Before that, Ms. Bhatia served since 2014 as the Director for Development Partner Relations at the World Bank Group. Previously, she held the position of Director of Partnerships and Advisory Services Operations (2011–2014) and Global Head of Knowledge at the International Finance Corporation (2010-2011).
Ms. Bhatia also served as Head of IFC’s Latin America Advisory Operations. In addition to Latin America, she has worked in Africa, Europe, Central Asia, and South and East Asia. Ms. Anita Bhatia brings extensive experience in the area of strategic partnerships, resource mobilization, and management. During her time at the IFC, she developed and expanded innovative partnerships with public and private sector partners to support its strategy in key areas, including fragile and conflict-affected states, gender equality, financial inclusion, support to women-owned businesses, and other priorities critical for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ms. Bhatia holds a BA in History from Calcutta University, an MA in Political Science from Yale University, and a Juris Doctor in Law from Georgetown University.

Sir Ronald Cohen is a pioneering philanthropist, venture capitalist, private equity investor, and social innovator, who is driving forward the global Impact Revolution. For nearly two decades, his ground-breaking initiatives have catalyzed global efforts to drive private capital to serve social and environmental good. He serves as Chairman of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment and The Portland Trust. He is a co-founder of Social Finance UK, USA, and Israel; and co-founder Chair of Bridges Fund Management and Big Society Capital. He chaired the G8 Social Impact Investment Taskforce (2013-2015), the UK Social Investment Task Force (2000-2010) and the UK’s Commission on Unclaimed Assets (2005-2007). In 2012 he received the Rockefeller Foundation’s Innovation Award for Social Finance. He was a co-founder and Executive Chairman of Apax Partners Worldwide LLP (1972-2005), a global private equity firm. He was a co-founder and Chairman of the British Venture Capital Association and a co-founder of the European Venture Capital Association. He is a member of the Board of Dean’s Advisors at Harvard Business School; a former director of the Harvard Management Company; and formerly a member of the Harvard University Board of Overseers and the University of Oxford Investment Committee. He graduated from Oxford University, where he was President of the Oxford Union. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School to which he was awarded a Henry Fellowship. Since 2006, Eva Halvarsson has acted as the CEO of the Second Swedish National Pension Fund -- AP2. She heads up an organization with more than SEK 345 billion (approx. USD 43 billion) under management in virtually every asset class, and one that is active in all parts of the world; AP2 is one of northern Europe's largest pension funds.Ms. Halvarsson began her career as an accountant, progressing to the point that before joining AP2, she spent ten years working for the Swedish Government where she was responsible for the governance and management of the large and extensive portfolio of state owned companies. Eva Halvarsson has had a distinguished and varied leadership career. She took part in the working group that put into effect the Swedish Corporate Governance Code in 2004. She also spent several years, serving on the Swedish Corporate Governance Board. Eva has been a board member of several large companies and has chaired the nomination committees of some of Sweden’s largest listed companies. She recently left after serving for ten years as the Deputy Chairperson of the board of the University of Gothenburg.Presently, she is board member of the UN-PRI (the United Nation´s Principles for Responsible Investments), Vasakronan (the largest real estate company in Sweden), The Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development and The Royal Swedish Opera. Piet Klop has been developing PGGM’s portfolio of “investing in solutions” to the Sustainable Development Goals, including impact measurement. He also leads PGGM’s engagement efforts around water risk. Before joining PGGM Investments in July 2011, Piet was at the World Resources Institute in Washington DC and held senior positions at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the private sector. As a water resources expert, he worked at the World Bank and United Nations. Piet holds master’s degrees in Water Resources Management (Wageningen University, 1989) and Applied Environmental Economics (University of London, 1999).

Dr Scilla Elworthy turns vision into action. Today her full attention is on developing Business Plan for Peace, resulting from her 2017 book: The Business Plan for Peace: Building a World Without War. She has been three times nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for developing effective dialogue between nuclear weapons policymakers worldwide and their critics, with the Oxford Research Group she founded in 1982. Peace Direct, voted ‘Best New Charity’ in 2005, goes from strength to strength under brilliant young leadership, founded by Scilla in 2002 to fund, promote and learn from local peace-builders in conflict areas. Scilla was adviser to Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Sir Richard Branson in setting up ‘The Elders’, and was Awarded the Niwano Peace Prize in 2003. She co-founded Rising Women Rising World in 2013, and FemmeQ in 2016 to establish the qualities of feminine intelligence - for men as for women - as essential for building a safer world. Her TED talk on non-violence has been viewed by over 1,400,000 people on TED and YouTube. Her book Pioneering the Possible: awakened leadership for a world that works (North Atlantic Books, 2014) continues to receive critical acclaim from experts in the field. She’s Ambassador for Peace Direct, a Councillor of the World Future Council and patron of Oxford Research Group; adviser to the Syria Campaign and the Institute for Economics and Peace. She advises the leadership of selected international corporations as well as young social entrepreneurs. Scilla is a mother, stepmother, and grandmother and loves messing about in her garden near Oxford in the UK.

Amit Bouri is the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of the GIIN. His work in impact investing began when he was a strategy consultant with the Monitor Institute. At Monitor he was part of the team that produced the Investing for Social & Environmental Impact report, and he left Monitor to co-found the GIIN in 2009.Amit's other projects at the Monitor Institute included strategic planning and organizational development work for nonprofit organizations and foundations. Amit previously worked in the private sector as a strategy consultant with Bain & Company. He left Bain to work in global health at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. He also worked in the corporate philanthropy units of Gap Inc. and Johnson & Johnson. Amit holds an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, an MPA from Harvard University's John F. Dr. Mark Mobius has spent more than 40 years working in the emerging markets. He has been a key figure in developing international policy for emerging markets. In 1999, Dr. Mobius was selected to serve on the World Bank’s Global Corporate Governance Forum as a member of the Private Sector Advisory Group and as co-chairman of its Investor Responsibility Task Force. Today, Dr. Mobius is a member of the Economic Advisory Board of the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Since 2010, he is also a member of the supervisory board of OMV Petrom in Romania and has also served as a director on the Board of Lukoil, the Russian oil company. Former executive chairman of Templeton Emerging Markets Group, Dr. Mobius was with Franklin Templeton for more than 30 years, where he headed the emerging markets team until 2016. In 1987, he became manager of the Templeton Emerging Markets Fund, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. During his time with Franklin Templeton, his Emerging Markets Group expanded assets under management from US$100 million to more than US$40,000 million and launched a number of emerging market and frontier funds focusing on Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. In addition to open-end and closed end mutual funds, Dr. Mobius launched a successful series of emerging market private equity funds. Prior to joining Templeton, Dr. Mobius was Chief Executive of International Investment Trust in Taiwan, the first international investment company in that country managing the NYSE listed Taiwan ROC Fund. A prolific writer, Dr. Mobius is the author of numerous books translated into several languages, including: The Little Book of Emerging Markets (2012); Mark Mobius - An Illustrated Biography (2007); Passport to Profits (1999/2012); Mobius on Emerging Markets (1996); The Investor's Guide to Emerging Markets (1994); and Trading with China (1973). A recognised global emerging markets expert, appearing frequently in the media including global networks Bloomberg, CNBC, MSNBC, and CNN, Dr. Mobius has received numerous industry awards, including: Life Time Achievement Award in Asset Management (2017) Global Investor Magazine; 50 Most Influential People (2011) Bloomberg Markets Magazine; and Top 100 Most Powerful and Influential People (2006) Asiamoney. He received his Ph.D. in Economics and Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1964. Before that he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Science in Mass Communications from Boston University. Dr. Mobius also studied at the University of Wisconsin, University of New Mexico, and Kyoto University in Japan.
Hazel Henderson D.Sc.Hon., FRSA, founder of Ethical Markets Media, Certified B Corporation. She is a world-renowned futurist, active environmentalist, syndicated columnist, and author of award-winning Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy (2006); Mapping the Global Transition to the Solar Age (2014), and other books in 800 libraries, in 20 languages, including “Planetary Citizenship “co-authored by Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda. Ethical Markets is the publisher of Henderson’s forthcoming textbook, “Mapping the Global Green Transition: 2009-2020“.
She is the producer of the global TV series “Transforming Finance“ and the Ethical Markets TV series. She created in 2004 the EthicMark® Awards for Communications Uplifting the Human Spirit & Society, showcasing positive messages to raise the ethical bar on global advertising and in 2009 the annual Green Transition Scoreboard®.
She launched the EthicMarkGEMS®.com, the first global standard certifying only gems NOT mined from Mother Earth, to phase out unnecessary global gem mining, now chemically- identical gems are cheaply available worldwide and also co-created Ethical Biomimicry Finance®. Henderson served as a cabinet-level science policy advisor to the US Office of Technology Assessment, the National Science Foundation, and the National Academy of Engineering.
Her over 400 articles appear in Harvard Business Review, New York Times, LeMonde Diplomatique, and journals in Japan, Britain, Venezuela, China, France, Australia. Joanne Kellermann

Joanne Kellermann is the Chair of PFZW, the pension fund for the Care and Welfare sector and the 2nd largest pension fund in The Netherlands. Before that, she was a Board Member of the Single Resolution Board (SRB) in Brussels, since its inception in 2015. From 2007 until 2014 she was an executive member of the Governing Board of the Netherlands Central Bank (DNB), responsible for supervision. She was actively involved in all major crisis interventions in the Netherlands’ financial sector and after the crisis lead the development of supervising culture and behaviour in firms. She started her career as a lawyer in the law firm NautaDutilh and was a partner in the finance practice in Amsterdam and London between 1992 and 2005. She currently also chairs the board of supervisory directors of NWB Bank NV, the board of the University of Utrecht and Aflatoun International, an NGO that empowers 10 million children annually worldwide through social and financial education.

As Managing Director Global Responsible Investment & Governance Claudia Kruse is part of the management team of the investment function reporting into the Chief Investment Officer/ Board. Her seventeen people strong team implements the responsible investment policy on behalf of APG and its clients across all asset classes. The focus is on active ownership, ESG integration tailored to the specific investment strategies and investing in solutions that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. Before joining APG in 2009, she worked on the buy and sell-side in London for almost a decade. She was appointed to the German Corporate Governance Code Commission in 2016, and in 2017 was member of the EU Expert Group on Sustainable Finance whose recommendations inspired the EU Action Plan on Sustainable Finance. She is on the Board of the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN). In 2016 she was voted CIO Europe’s Next Generation CIO Award winner. Claudia is co-chair of the PRI SDG Advisory Committee. Claudia studied International Management & Chinese, and has an MSc Tourism & Development (UCL, London). She has lived in Germany, China, the UK and now the Netherlands. She has inter alia published on the Governance of Sustainability and the integration of sustainability into remuneration which reflects her strong belief in the connection between good governance and sustainability.

Elsa Palanza

Elsa Palanza is a Managing Director and the Global Head of Sustainability & ESG for Barclays. In this role, Elsa leads the strategic direction and execution of the bank’s policies and practices across a broad range of sustainability and ESG matters, including climate change, environmental stewardship, human rights, and social impact. She manages ESG assessment and approach for the firm, strengthening client and investor engagement, and ensuring diverse stakeholder perspectives are integrated into decision-making. In addition, Elsa oversees the development of appropriate and ambitious standards and metrics to advance green and sustainable finance and steward early innovation in sustainable product and service development.
Elsa assumed this role with over 20 years of experience as a strategic advisor for corporations, foundations, and non-profits. Most recently, she was enlisted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to create and launch a platform to advance progress on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. For many years, Elsa served as Director of Commitments for the Clinton Global Initiative, a role that afforded her comprehensive insight into best practices in sustainability, cross-sector partnership development, and corporate responsibility. Previously, she worked in Washington, D.C., delivering geopolitical and industry risk analysis to large international energy companies, and in Istanbul, Turkey, leading strategy and business operations for an education company.

Ross Piper

Ross Piper is the Chief Executive Officer of Christian Super. He has over 25 years of leadership and management experience in corporate and non-profit contexts. Prior to Ross’ appointment as Christian Super CEO in January 2018, he was Chief Operating Officer with World Vision Australia and also served with World Vision International for several years in the Middle East and various countries of the former Yugoslavia. During his career Ross has held a number of positions in the corporate sector, primarily in investment banking and mining. He was Head of Corporate Risk for Macquarie Group for several years, and his early professional experience was gained in Indigenous communities and the mining sector, where he worked in the area of Native Title and community enterprise development. He served as a Director and Chair of AgroInvest, a microfinance bank serving rural families in Serbia and Montenegro, and currently sits on various other boards for organisations focused on social enterprise and technology. He is currently the Deputy Chair of the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (www.responsibleinvestment.org). Ross’ formal qualifications include a BSc (Geophysics), GradDipEd, and MBA (Deakin University).
Sarah Gordon

Sarah Gordon took over as chief executive of the Impact Investing Institute in September 2019. Previously, she spent 18 years at the Financial Times, where she ran the paper's corporate coverage during the financial crisis and was most recently business editor. Before journalism, she worked in fund management in the UK and the US, and at the UN Conference for Trade and Development in Geneva. Sarah was a panel member of the recent independent inquiry into the future of civil society, led by Julia Unwin CBE, and was formerly a trustee of CSV, one of the UK’s largest volunteering charities. She is a non-executive director of Social Finance and a visiting professor at Kings College London.
