   GOOGLE MAPS

Established in 1838 under the name Natura Artis Magistra, ARTIS is one the five oldest zoos in the world. With a long history in both architecture and as a civic organisation, this unique, historic location has been a hallmark for the city of Amsterdam for 185 years.

Aside from the Royal Zoo, on its premises are located Micropia, a museum dedicated to microorganisms, the ARTIS-Acquarium, and the Groote Museum.

The Groote Museum, also known as the Main Building, was added in 1850-1855 and is located in the oldest ARTIS site, the outside Middenhof. Initially used as a meeting place for the members of the Royal Zoological Society Natura Artis Magistra for studying the natural world, the Groote Museum is the first 19th century museum building constructed with an exhibition purpose in the Netherlands.
