The Groote Museum, also known as the Main Building, was added in 1850-1855 and is located in the oldest ARTIS site, the outside Middenhof. Initially used as a meeting place for the members of the Royal Zoological Society Natura Artis Magistra for studying the natural world, the Groote Museum is the first 19th century museum building constructed with an exhibition purpose in the Netherlands.
